What are Dental Implants?
For the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), a dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that serves as a substitute for the root of the tooth. Once you have had your dental implant placed in your jaw bone, there is a healing period that the patient has to go through for approximately 3 months. Additionally, a connector, known as an abutment, is placed on the top of the dental implant, which connects it to the replacement tooth, also known as a dental crown.

What are the steps for a dental implant procedure?
A small hole is drilled at the edentulous (the area where there is no tooth). After the initial hole has been drilled, it must be widened in order to allow for placement of the implant screw. A protective screw is then placed on top of the implant to allow it to heal. After 3 to 4 months, the protective screw is removed, and a temporary crown is placed on top of the dental implants. The crown allows the gum line to surround the teeth naturally. Once the gum has developed properly over time, the temporary crown will be removed and a permanent crown will be put in its place. This completes the process of a dental implant.
What do you need to know after a dental implant surgery?
Patients who have just received one or more dental implants will have sensitivity to regular brushing. The dentist typically provides a special mouthwash for patients to use the first couple of days after the procedure. Once the sensitivity subsides, regular brushing and flossing of implants is very important.
