Endodontics, more commonly called root canal treatment, is a dentistry specialty dealing with tooth pulp (the center of a tooth made of living cells and tissue) abnormalities and issues surrounding the root of a tooth. The causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of such diseased or injured teeth can now readily be taken care of with the help of endodontics, whereas in the past once a tooth was diseased or damaged it was usually pulled.
The following symptoms may signify a need for a root canal:
- Persistent pain or discomfort in the tooth
- Sensitivity in the tooth to cold or hot foods or beverages
- Tenderness in the gums when eating
